Wild Things Make My Heart Sing

#Rewilding your yard

I’m working on a story about a friend who is trying to bring back native savannas on his 5K farm in the Cumberland Plateau, TN. When I saw this story about six steps to rewilding your yard, had to see how I stack up with my Florida-native, bee, bird, bat and snake-loving yard. I live on 3 acres that I tend myself (sometimes with the help of a friend)! But, mostly me. It’s a lot, but I’ve always loved the unkempt garden look and love sitting out back by the waterfall and watching the birds on the feeders or the hawks (golden tailed and red shouldered) osprey and sandhill cranes, various egrets and the occasional vulture. I’ve even seen otters back there. My shrubs are live with bees and bumblebees so…. Let’s see how I do on the rewilding

Start Small… (this train left the stations several years ago, though I do have a few smaller planning areas around the property.

Evaluate Your Space… (I have a lot of space!)

Connect with Experts… that can be the local extension service, local nursery or wold bird food store….or, you can always consult the internet.

Meet the Neighbors…Bugs and insects are a sign your ecosystem is working! I have frogs…. Did I mention my frogs?

Embrace Mistakes….make sure you’re not buying invasives to plant or that the flower packets provide food for the birds and butterflies you want. Mistakes? Just don’t make them.

Offer support and ask for help…Remember, your little space makes a difference to the living things that share it, including the humans.
