Orcas in Spain are ramming boats hard enough to force them to be towed back to port for repair. Scientists wonder if it’s “play” that went too far or something else? My husband speculates that the orcas are pissed. The orcas have damaged yachts and other vessels, sometimes injuring crew. Two thoughts on this: the orcas don’t like the direction we’re heading and plan to point us in a new one. Or, they’ve become territorial and decided to push intruders from their place. After all, what have we (collectively, humanity) done for them lately (or at all). Scientists who’ve imagined close encounters with these amazing mammals are not rethinking their career choices, but are thinking about keeping a safe distance. Hey, maybe it’s the orcas telling us that a little “social distancing” may be called for?
