A thousand years ago while I was working at Mote Marine Laboratory in Sarasota, NOAA was testing a new technology LIDAR, light detection and ranging. They were measuring the coastline. Lo these many years later LIDAR is used in CAS—collision avoidance systems. With the growth of self-driving cars, refinement is needed. So, bugs. Ever notice that they never bump into each other mid-flight? And they don’t have LIDAR. They use comparatively simple, highly energy efficient, obstacle-avoiding, neural circuitry to navigate during travel. I wonder if they’ll be able to help us navigate the obstacles in our lives. At least scientists think they can find the buzz in bugs.
