We saw the movie Hustlers. First, let me say I love Jennifer Lopez. I wish that at 50 I had the ambition and money it takes to maintain your 30-year-old body…or booty. Still, last night on Stephen Colbert she talked about how hard it is to pole dance.
It reminded me that many years ago….2010, I got a Groupon and took several women from the office and a friend, Phoenix McKinney to a pole dancing lesson. I was older than everyone except Phoenix.
It became very clear that pole dancing is hard work demanding strength and coordination. At the time I was a racquetball player and runner. Pretty fit. Anyway, as the lesson proceeded it seemed that I was the only one of us who could get up on the pole and twirl (swirl?).
Because I could, I did it over and over and over again. I felt strong even though it was clear I couldn’t do what the teacher could, I could do much more than everyone else. So I did. Again and again and again.
The next night, we had a staff event at Side Splitters, a comedy club, to laugh together.
“Are your arms sore?” I asked. “No,” each said in turn… “I’m just fine,” in those words or others.
There was a two-drink minimum. Because of showing off the day before…I couldn’t move my arms to bring my drink to my lips. Still, totally worth it.
I wonder if that studio is still open….
