We are all going to be lifelong learners or we will be left behind. The world is fast changing. We must keep up with new challenges in technology, the latest developments in our fields and… physical changes. This doesn’t discount the need to manage the context of misery: the pandemic and its consequences, but it does suggest that now more than ever, we need to be active, mentally and physically.
In February I started doing what I call “dirt therapy.” On Friday, Saturday and Sunday I spend 2-3 hours doing landscaping in our 2.5 acre fenced yard. To be fair, before the pandemic, I tried to do stuff for an hour or two 2-3 days over the weekend, but it amounted to an hour or two of weeding or digging and then we went to the casino.
Casino days behind us, dirt therapy began.
No more LA Fitness, with or without personal training. No more in-studio yoga, it’s Zoom, baby, every morning at 9 am (yes, that’s why I can’t meet with you then, clients…..) Book club, writing group, all have moved online.
But one thing hasn’t changed. We must continue to evolve.
On Facebook I saw an ad for an elliptical machine that was also a bicycle. I mentioned it to my husband and before I knew it, it was delivered to the house. He assembled it so it was my turn to try to figure it out.
I wrestled with it at first, but I muscled the device forward and, finally figured it out. The bad news is OMG this is hard. The good news is that I burned 75 calories in less than 10 minutes. My daily goal is 550 calories, so… literally it’s a step in the right direction and a new “skill.”
I learn new words in my word games. I learn new works reading @LeslieJamison I learn new skills, video editing and writing and…. The body can’t be left out. I learned to use my @StreetSlider and I am better for all of it.
