I’ve read one book and seen two movies that are told “through the screen” or through emails and transcribed voicemails. There have apparently been more than the two I’ve seen on the screen. It seems right, doesn’t it? Or wrong, since we spend so much time glued to our little screens. We post to Facebook and Instagram; we make movies for TikTok and other platforms. We create tiny stories, and sometimes they are even called “movies” about our lives and friends and families and books and hairstyles and, well, everything. They are funny and interesting but rarely sad. Or scary. Though, don’t get me started on the latest news coverage of sentient AI. The big-screen movies tend to be scary. What is it about telling a story through a certain-sized screen that dictates its content? Or does it matter because we can stream content on any device?
