So why spend all that time and money in back-breaking landscaping? (I argue it’s well beyond “gardening”.) The answer is easy: back yard wildlife. We have three criteria for plants in the yard: Does it support native birds, bees and wildlife; Is it drought-tolerant; Is it native because that reduces the need for fertilizers and pesticides. We have some non-natives in the yard and we have some plants that might be considered “invasive” but these are in “contained” areas to make aggressive expansion difficult or impossible.
