The author tells us to choose an institution that matters to us: court, school, journalism (these are mostly my suggestions) and support it. He says that institutions do not protect themselves. I argue that they do, but necessarily, that defense is less vigorous. News has been dominated by the loss of our “norms” and traditions. Change is destabilizing at best. Disturbing. Traditionally conservatives want to maintain stasis and progressives want change to meet the future. Each has appeal. The world is changing so fast. To have our institutions in flux at the same time is disorienting. A tyrant wants to be the port in the storm, offering stability by demonstrating the ability to control, to calm waters, in a world churning with change.
